How I became a French Polisher

Updated: Feb 28, 2019

Brian's Dad Horace served his apprenticeship as a French Polisher before the second world war and came back to it after five years as a prisoner of war. Horace was self employed and did many jobs for local people. Times were hard and with no vehicle it was common for him to transport a complete bedroom suite on his handcart. Tough work for a 8 stone 5' 2" bloke.

When he was about twelve years old Brian started to learn from his Dad after school and in the holidays . His first regular work was polishing coffins! After eight years away at University, he took up French Polishing full time in 1982. Brian spent about twenty years working at one of the country's largest manufacturers and restorers of Church furniture. Stripping and polishing a batch of fifty twelve foot pews was one of his run of the mill jobs.
